GENERAL PRACTITIONER
Dr Merci Kusel
MBBS, PhD, Grad Certificate in Nutritional & Environmental Health
Dr Kusel moved to Perth after completing her medical studies in Singapore.
She established her own family medical practice in Mosman Park in 1983 and continued in clinical practice whilst undertaking doctoral studies at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research.
Asthma and respiratory illnesses are the most common causes of morbidity and hospitalisation in childhood and Australia has one of the highest rates of asthma, hay fever and eczema in the world. Thus, for her PhD thesis Dr Kusel investigated the influence of respiratory infections and environmental factors in early life on the development of asthma and allergies in childhood. She continues working in this area of research and has authored and co-authored many papers on asthma, allergies and immune development in childhood. She has also delivered many oral presentations at national and international conferences.
Dr Kusel has received training in environmental and nutritional medicine at Swinburne University and has also completed an acupuncture course for medical practitioners. She is a reviewer for several medical journals and is an editorial board member of the journal “Paediatrics and Child Health in General Practice”. Dr Kusel also serves as a peer reviewer for the National Health and Medical Research Council and is cohort co-ordinator for the WHO Collaborating Centre for Children’s Environmental Health Research in WA.
Dr Kusel has always had an interest in nutritional health and the role of the patient in determining their health. She firmly believes that empowering individuals to make lifestyle choices is the best and most effective way to effect major positive health outcomes.
On a personal level, Dr Kusel is actively involved in regular physical exercise and is a firm believer in the health benefits of meditation. Over the years she has gained much insight from her patients and colleagues on the role of other treatment modalities including nutritional medicine, acupuncture and mind-body medicine. Thus, now working at The Healing Tree, she is able to work with other therapists to integrate conventional medicine with complementary therapies to help her patients achieve their optimum health.
